about

Penn Bryce began 2020 with the intent of forming a band. As for all of us, 2020 had other plans. This record is the result.

Of the pieces here, only “Babies” was relatively complete before the pandemic. “Mountains'' was a few chords and nothing else. Prior to the actual recording over the past year, Bryce had little or no sense of what most of this record would sound like before actually recording it. “Improvised” suggests too intentional a process. This music, taken as a whole, just happened.

Roughly a month before this release, Bryce understood that he had his record. Intention kicked in. Relatively formless recordings were edited into form. “Mountains” got lyrics. After some overdubs, tracks were sequenced into a whole, or more precisely two halves, through cross-fades and jump-cuts.

One approach to meditation practice is to cultivate absolute presence with what actually is: not what one wants, not some sense of bliss, but precisely what is. Once off the cushion, we approach a different world. Musically, Penn Bryce cultivated that presence in these recordings. He heard what happened, gave it form, and offers it here. - Bill Foreman
